Nuyorican
Poets Café Marks 30th Anniversary Season with Star-Studded
Celebration at Town Hall, November 8th
New York –
On November 8, 2003 the Nuyorican
Poets Cafe, a renown arts organization worldwide, will
stop New York City in its tracks celebrating their 30th anniversary
season at the legendary Town Hall. This promises to be a monumental
all-star night that will pay homage to the achievements made
since its birth in the early 70’s.
Known to many as
the “mecca of spoken word,” the Nuyorican Poets
Cafe: ALOUD the 30th anniversary celebration, will feature
a slew of performances the Cafe is notorious for. From raw
unbridle spoken word to theatrical expression of “the
third kind;” the lyrical feast that is being offered
has no boundaries when it comes to showing the true essences
of the Nuyorican Poets Cafe.
Nuyorican Poets Cafe: ALOUD, the 30th anniversary
celebration will be presenting the Miky Achievement Award
for excellence. Benjamin Bratt, Rosie Perez, John Leguizamo
and Russell Simmons’ Def Poetry Jam are those nominated
for this unique award for taking the arts to the next level.
It is individuals such as these who are infused with the same
passion and dedication for the arts as founders Miguel Algarin
and Miguel Piñero had as they developed this oasis
for artistic exploration. Scheduled performers for ALOUD include
Reg E. Gaines & Savion Glover of the Broadway musical
Bring in Da Noise, Bring in Da Funk / Mayda Del Valle of Def
Poetry Jam on Broadway / The Latin Jazz stylings of Chris
Washburn Syotos Band / plus many more.
ALOUD will also
serve as a benefit, which will go towards the renovation and
expansion of the Cafe. The project will allow the Cafe, a
tax-exempt not-for-profit organization, to continue to provide
a stage and a creative outlet for artists. Ongoing support
by celebrities and top industry professionals continue to
arrive as more recognize the importance of the Cafe as a whole
and as a stage for a diverse group of artists.
Deeply solidified
in the community, the Cafe’s reputation has reached
far beyond its Lower East Side home. With its mission to create
a multi-cultural venue that both nurtures artists and provides
an ongoing support system for them as they grow, it’s
no wonder why many have considered the Nuyorican Poets Cafe
as their home and not just a starting point.
Nuyorican
Poets Cafe: ALOUD will begin at 8pm on Saturday, November
8, 2003 at The Town Hall, 123 West 43rd Street. Tickets prices
start at $25. For more information log on to www.nuyorican.org
